We offer prices that are 20–30% more competitive than our competitors because we source all our wood panel products directly from our own factory and import most of our furniture fittings ourselves. This makes us the only furniture material supplier in the market with complete vertical integration. We are also proud to partner with leading kitchen and bedroom contractors who have contributed to some of the largest and most luxurious real estate developments in the country. The HDS Group cuts and edges over 3,000 melamine panels daily, equivalent to approximately 300 kitchens every day.
We have been proudly serving our customers, particularly carpenters, for nearly 25 years, continuously adding value through innovation and improvement. As pioneers in the South African market, we were the first to introduce UV gloss panels and PVC foam board. Looking ahead, we are excited to launch several innovative new products designed to deliver even greater value to our customers, both directly and indirectly. This is made possible by our significant presence and scale in the market. We have been pioneers in developing and supporting the black carpenter trade, expanding our reach by opening stores in traditional townships. Many of these carpenters have become the backbone of the kitchen and bedroom installation industry, playing a key role in some of the country’s most luxurious real estate developments. Unlike many of the pop up, informal and foreign owned cut and edge suppliers, the HDS group stores are fully statutory compliant and offer a back up and peace of mind service. It is for this reason that we offer a 10 year warranty on all our wood products that are correctly installed and used according to our product specification guide.

Milestones
2001
Started own distribution and trading of chipboard and MDF.
2002
Established first manufacturing centre at Waltloo, Pretoria. The company is focused on producing veneered products and foiled boards and distributing chipboard, MDF, plywood and Masonite.
2005
Installation of first melamine press – built in house – addition of melamine products to product portfolio.
2006
Installation of second melamine press and purchase of a factory in Benoni to house the whole melamine upgrading activity.
2007
Establishment of the distribution strategy to provide outlets for own manufactured product with opening of board distribution business in Benoni, Pretoria West, Vereeniging and Klerksdorp.
2008
Increased the capacity of the Waltloo (Pretoria East) operation by renting the adjacent land and warehouse.
2008

Expansion into timber and timber products.

Replacement of first-generation home build melamine presses with a state-of-the-art melamine press and boiler.

Establishment of woodworking machine trading business designed to import and supply branches with equipment for value add “cut and edge” services to their customers, as well as for specific third-party customers.
2011
Installation of a second melamine press at the Benoni operation – establishing FX as the third largest melamine board producer in South Africa.
Commissioning of a deep mould press for door skins in Benoni as part of a strategy of diversification into interior and exterior doors.
Opening of branches in Port Shepstone and Witbank.
Establishment of a “retail” distribution function at Waltloo plant to service Pretoria East.
Commissioning of three CNC machines for door skin engraving and the manufacture of wrap doors.
Commissioning of two static post-formers as part of a line to manufacture kitchen worktops to supply distribution centres and third-party customers.
Opening of branches in Marula and Hammanskraal.
2012
Opening of branches in Trichardt (Secunda), Newcastle and Silverton (Pretoria).
Establishment with the Industrial Development Corporation of joint venture fund to investigate feasibility of new Medium Density Fibreboard plant at Lothair, Mpumalanga. Environmental Impact Assessment process started in June 2013.
2013
Opening of branches in Durban, Tembisa, Burgersfort and Pietermaritzburg CBD.
2014
Opening of branches in Ermelo, Mafikeng and Church Street – Pretoria CBD.
Conversion of FX Veneers CC to The FX Group (Pty) Ltd and appointment of the Board of the FX Group.
2015
Opening of Krugersdorp branch.
Signing of joint venture with Bergvik Flooring for manufacture of particleboard flooring tiles in South Africa.
Purchase of PUR clue system bonding line for production in 2016 of acrylic gloss panels and specialist bonding services to marketplace.
2016
Purchase of UV curing high gloss coating line to replace current imports of this fast-growing product line.
Purchase of adjacent property in Benoni South of 10 000 m2 from Engen Oil bring total Benoni complex size to 22 000 m2.
Establishment and registration of Home Décor Solutions – Cut and Edge as retail brand of The FX Group – see www.hdsgroup.co.za .
Signing of a Cooperation agreement with China FOMA – The State forestry Development Company of China, encompassing the establishment of a timber and board machinery joint venture sales organisation, a line of credit for the imports of Chinese manufactured products and further technical cooperation around capital project feasibilities.
Purchase of the assets of Plaza board West Rand and the absorption of the business into The FX Group retail network – now renamed Home Décor Solutions – Main Reef Road.
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Springs to focus on servicing customers in the far east Rand of Gauteng and Mpumalanga province.
2017
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Soweto, a wholesale board operation for the greater Soweto market.
Opening of FOMA Southern Africa a Joint Venture between The FX Group, China FOMA and Shanghai FUMA. The business is centred on the supply and support of machines for the woodworking and panel processing market. The showroom and warehouse is located in Germiston, Gauteng.
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Middleburg, to further focus on customers in the Mpumalanga “Highveld” market.
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Ladysmith to focus on the KwaZulu Natal market.
2018
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Brits to focus on the North West market.
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Empangeni to focus on the northern KwaZulu Natal market.
2019
Started construction on particle board factory in Lothair, for production of 300 m³ a day A Grade particle board of a size 2750 x 1830mm. In addition, the factory will see the installation of three melamine presses and the commissioning of a 4.5 MW biomass power plant to provide power. The factory has been funded by The FX Group, Industrial Development Corporation, China FOMA (Group) Co., Ltd and Department of Trade and Industry.
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Bloemfontein to service the Free State market. This HDS store opening represents a footprint of six provinces for the HDS Brand.
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Kya Sands to service the north east Johannesburg market.
Re-launch of Home Décor Solutions, Silverton Pretoria in new premises and with new management team.
Opening of Home Décor Solution, Louis Trichardt to service far North Limpopo Province.
2020
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Kimberly to service the Northern Cape Market – this store extends our HDS footprint to 35 stores and 7 provinces.
2021
28th May 18:34 sees first board from the particle board press line at Lothair. July sees the sanding line commissioned and August the first melamine press.
2022
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Piet Retief (Mkhondo) to service Northern KZN, Eastern Mpumalanga and southern Swaziland markets.
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, Alberton to service Johannesburg southern suburbs.
Opening of the Board Merchant, Selby central Johannesburg to service furniture cluster in the CBD.
October – First power generated at the 4,5 Mw biomass fuelled, pressurised steam turbine power plant at Lothair. This is the second largest biomass fed power plant in Southern Africa and will supply the Lothair site with all its electricity needs from the controlled combustion of waste biomass – sourced from dumps at local sawmills and from chipping of regional clear-felling waste.
Perfection and fine turning of biomass fuelled power plant to provide electricity to Lothair factory complex at R0,60 per Kw Hour (excluding capital costs).
Opening of Home Décor Solutions, De Deur to service the Southern Gauteng customer base.

Rebranding of HDS Cut and Edge Silverton to “Studio Cut and Edge” to explore the mid to upper market in greater Pretoria market.
Opening of industrial cut and edge operation (high volume) at Benoni factory for contract cutting and support of HDS Cut and Edge branches during “load shedding” and for large orders.
